Can hobby horses save the Olympics?
We admit it: The idea was born in a fit of caffeine deficiency and acute deadline panic. But sometimes, the best ideas are also the most absurd ones. Over a cup of lukewarm, bad coffee, we, the editorial team, decided in exactly five minutes: Traditional Olympic equestrian sport has lost its right to exist due to persistent scandals, vague statements, and bizarre rule changes like the "No-Blood Rule." It must be replaced immediately, or at least in the near future, by the viral trend sport Hobby Horsing.
This is not just a satirical demand, but a sober economic and ethical analysis.
The International Olympic Commitee (IOC) would save millions on logistics, medals for the horses (this was recently proposed), crisis PR and the perfect camera angle. What's more, the Olympic Games could finally attract sponsors that the general public can identify with! Instead of luxury watches, luxury clothing brands, banks and caviar, the Olympics have the opportunity to form fair partnerships with the local DIY store (for the hurdle wood!), the big discount supermarket (for the spectators' and athletes' catering!) or the local craft shop (for manes and equipment!). It's a win-win for everyone: the elite horses (who can finally have some peace and quiet), the IOC (which saves millions) and the fans (who can identify with their top Hobby Horse athletes and can also try to achieve Olympic Gold)!
There would be no more negative press about blue tongues or nosebleeds (unless a Hobby Horser falls on their face). Controversial Vet Checks after competitions would be obsolete. Instead, we would gain inclusion, boundless fun, genuine teamwork, and a guaranteed animal-welfare-friendly discipline. The Olympic future belongs to the sport that solves problems and doesn't create new ones – and the trend sport Hobby Horsing is the only solution we came up with during the coffee break.
